Hannah Milam

Our banner artisit this month is Hannah Milam, a graduate of Fine Arts at Reading University and currently based in her studio in Brighton. The piece featured on the site has the catchy title of "020609S4T7", "I give all my pieces codes because I come up with a lot of them during the week. Luckily you called me at home where I can look it up!".

Hannah's current work includes large scale drawings (inspried by Hieronymus Bosch and psychadelic imagery), small scale commissions and, interestingly, screw-on dreadlocks for a friend. "We added dreadlocks from another person until they matted into his real ones, then we cut them down and attched nuts and screws into them" she explained, "now he can screw in the dread extentions or have other things like MP3 players attached to them".

Other work included the interesting "Road Kill Underwear" project, where she used the fur of road kill to create luxury fur lingere. "In the height of the PETA campaign against fur in the 90's, the number of fasion designers using fur actually increased over the next couple of years". It's a controversial topic for many, but Hannah's vegan-like approach of using road kill to source the fur raises an important issue; "there's hundreds of tons of animals killed on the roads every year and in the end it all just gets incinerated. It's a huge waste".

A portion of Hannah's work is currently up at her myspace page, myspace.com/octopusart.
