Garry Milne

Garry Milne’s illustration work mixes psychadelia, nature and refined polished technique, resulting in complex and intriguing works with plenty to look at and to inspire dreams of other worlds. This aesthetic comes through in both his commissioned work and personal projects, his artwork being picked up by Fabric for use on the Fabric Live posters and CD mix releases as well as various magazines making Garry into an ideal music / art crossover for the null+void banner series.

Who are you? What do you do? And where are you from?
My name is Garry Milne, I’m an Illustrator & Designer and I’m from Hemel Hempsted.

Who or what are your inspirations?
I have a lot of inspirations but a large part of my life is skateboarding. I’ve been doing it my whole life so skateboard graphics and the surrounding cultures have definitely been a huge inspiration. It kind of led me to become interested in art in the first place.
I also have a huge book collection, which always inspires me to want to make something.

What are you currently working on?
I have just finished a series of board designs for Motive Skateboards. I am working on a cardigan for Lark Rising, a poster for a job pitch for the computer game Dirt3 and some T-shirts for Dephect clothing.
I’m also doing some painting for a personal project - so I have a bit to do!

How do you like to work?
I think I’m most productive at night time. All of my illustration work starts off as pencil drawings that get neatened up and coloured on the computer.

I usually have a rough idea of composition and colours before I start.
I always try to include a narrative or concept. I like to think that the audience will be intrigued rather than just seeing it as a pretty picture.

Have you ever been in a fight? And if so, what happened?
No not really, in primary school I had a few but then that doesn’t really count. I could make up a story about how I used to be a pirate cage fighter if you like?... But sadly that would be lying.

Thanks to Garry for submitting to null+void and taking the time to answer some questions for us.
