Pixelh8 has been circuit bending a different toy every day for a month for his An Apple A Day project for Childhood Remixed, an art show part of his home town of Ipswich's Ip-art festival. He has also created "Beat Unboxed" a sequencer for people to, well,  sequence some of these circuit bent toys in the exhibition.

Using an Arduino, a PC, lots of relays, toys and Processing, simply clicking on the the various colour blocks you can trigger off different sounds in this 16-step sequencer to make up your own songs with. In other (good) news Pixelh8's Samba Band is going from strength to strength with Marshall Amps now sponsoring them, using specifically created simple notation Matthew is able to easily involve children in creating music together.

Childhood Remixed was commissioned by Ipswich Borough Council & Turnstone Arts Grants sponsor Ip-art Award 2007- 2010 and will be on display in Town Hall Galleries from May 29th to July 12th as part of the Ip-art festival.

Team Doyobi on Mary Anne Hobbs

Alex Peverett and Chris Gladwin who are Team Doyobi's contributions to the Icasea's Audio Data Bank Sound compilation this year stood out as some of my favourite tracks. Their mix for Mary Anne Hobbs, moves between crunchy chip tune tracks and beats, being very nice and noisy, and a bit of disco cut up in there too. Pixelh8 is near the culminating live performance of his latest project, Oberservations.  A work that sets out to explore what it means to be an astronomer as part of Cambridge Science Fair. 

It's hard to fit in what he's doing, but he's a writer now for Wired, teacher, academic, musician, inventor, engineer, composer and artist into this one article or even here, you should definitely subscribe to his blog and mailing list via pixelh8.co.uk. His projects range from a DS samba band for which he has programmed software for and is about the launch the project nationally, encouraging children to make music together or ciruit bending the world's oldest and most historic computers at Bletchley Park last year.

Pixelh8 is one of my favourite artists and also damned nice guy so it was a real pleasure to speak to him about his ideas and ways of working.

Pixelh8 And The Revolution

Released today is the third studio album from circuit bending genius Pixelh8. He never fails to inspire me with the new and varied projects he is constantly involved with, the most stunning of all in my opnion was the Obsolete show and the valves of the Bletchly Park computers. 

But now we'll talk about his music production for album number three "And The Revolution". Some new sounds have appeared like a wailing electric guitar sound, and also for the first time ever the boy with the digital heart speaks (through a vocoder of course) and on tracks where he doesn't sing the melodies are doing so. It brings a human dimension to the music and it feels right, generally this album feels more human and emotive. There are pretty pop ditties with excellent grooves and melodies like on IED and then there are some excellent little rock out experimental pieces roughing the album up still keeping the glitch that first caught my ear.

The latest free software release from the ever busy Pixelh8 promising his 3rd album next month, this latest software development is on a new level regarding features than the previous releases and the display is suitably retro in aesthetic.
